European Weekend Breaks That Stretch Your Budget
City escapes that don't punish you for trying to enjoy them
Budapest still delivers
Budapest is the central European weekend benchmark for a reason. Two distinct sides of the river, dozens of thermal baths, a serious cafe culture, and a ruin-bar scene that has aged well. Prices have risen but stay below Vienna and Prague.
Skip the touristic Castle Hill restaurants. Eat in the seventh district instead. Take the Children's Railway up into the Buda hills on a Sunday morning.
Sofia, finally getting noticed
Sofia layers Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and communist history in a compact centre. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. Vitosha mountain rises directly behind the city for a half-day hike. Food is excellent and inexpensive: try a shopska salad, a kavarma, and a Bulgarian wine you haven't heard of.
Vilnius for atmosphere
Vilnius has one of the largest baroque old towns in Europe and one of the smallest crowds. Užupis, the small artists' quarter across the river, has its own constitution and a mildly silly republic-of-itself energy. The Hill of Crosses near Šiauliai is a worthwhile day trip if you have a fourth day.
Ljubljana for compactness
Ljubljana is small enough to walk across in 20 minutes and dense enough to fill three days. The Plečnik architecture is the through-line. Add a day at Bled or Bohinj for the lake-and-mountain photo, and pause for coffee at one of the riverside cafes around the Triple Bridge.
