Coastal Destinations That Cost Less Than the Riviera
Mediterranean coasts where a seafront room doesn't require a second mortgage
The Albanian Riviera
The southern Albanian coast was effectively closed to international tourism until the 1990s and is still half the price of its Greek and Italian neighbours. Dhërmi, Jale, and Himarë are the main beach villages. Gjipe is the photogenic crescent reachable only on foot or by boat.
Infrastructure has improved fast. The coastal road from the Llogara pass down to Saranda is genuinely one of the great Mediterranean drives. Stay in family-run guesthouses, eat at beach restaurants, expect to pay roughly half of what you would in Corfu across the strait.
Portugal's Alentejo coast
The Alentejo is the long stretch of coast south of Lisbon and north of the Algarve. It is much less developed than the south, partly because the Atlantic is colder, partly because the inland is sparsely populated. The beaches are huge and empty: Comporta in the north, Zambujeira do Mar further south, the chain of coves around the Costa Vicentina.
Comporta has had a luxury moment, but the rest of the coast has stayed accessible. Stay in a small guesthouse in a cork-oak village inland and drive ten minutes to the beach.
Mainland Greece west coast (Epirus)
Parga, Sivota, and the coast around Preveza give you the Greek coastal experience at mainland prices. Ferries to Lefkada and Paxos are short. The water is clear. The food is honest. Roads are quiet. Accommodation is two-thirds the price of the more famous islands across the water.
Where to be realistic
If you specifically want the Riviera scenery, the multicoloured villages on a steep coast, the Ligurian alternative (the eastern Cinque Terre is busy but the Tigullio coast around Sestri Levante is calmer) is closer to that look. The southern Costa Brava in Spain delivers a similar profile at a lower price. Both are cheaper than Cannes or Portofino without dropping the visual quality.
