Budget-Friendly Alternatives to Famous European Cities
Where your euro still buys a long lunch
Kraków over Prague
Prague's old town has become difficult. Trdelník stands every fifty metres, beer hall queues, and accommodation prices that have climbed quickly. Kraków is the obvious alternative: a similar central European feel, an arguably more beautiful main square, and a price level that hasn't yet caught up.
Stay in Kazimierz, the former Jewish quarter, for a calmer base and a strong food and bar scene. The Rynek Główny is still the main set-piece, but Kazimierz is where you'll actually spend evenings.
Porto over Lisbon
Lisbon has had a price spike that travellers feel immediately. Porto, three hours north by train, has the same colourful waterfront energy, better food per euro, and accommodation that hasn't yet been over-Airbnbed to the same degree. Add a Douro Valley day for wine and terraced vineyards.
Riga over Stockholm or Copenhagen
If you wanted Scandinavia and were quietly horrified by the price, Riga is the practical pivot. It has one of the largest collections of Art Nouveau buildings in Europe, an excellent central market in old Zeppelin hangars, and a wooden suburb at Pārdaugava that gives you a sense of pre-war Baltic life. Restaurant bills are routinely a third of what they would be in Copenhagen.
Belgrade over Vienna or Prague
Belgrade is rough-edged in a way Vienna isn't, and that's the appeal. The Sava and Danube confluence is dramatic. Skadarlija, the old bohemian quarter, still has live tamburica music in family-run restaurants. Coffee culture is taken seriously. Hotels and meals are roughly half what they are in any EU capital.
Bologna over Florence or Venice
If you wanted northern Italy and noticed Florence and Venice prices, Bologna is the answer. The student population keeps things honest. Pasta in a working trattoria is still under 15 euros. The city itself is fully walkable and has the porticoes that mean you stay dry in winter and shaded in summer.
Bucharest over Vienna
Bucharest does not look like Vienna, but it scratches a similar itch: a grand boulevard city with operatic architecture, a deep cafe culture, and prices that make eating out a daily pleasure rather than an occasion. The Lipscani quarter is the centre. The Village Museum is genuinely excellent. Two long weekends back to back wouldn't exhaust it.
