Our editorial process

Insight Directory is an independent travel publication. We do not accept paid placements in our editorial guides, and recommendations are made on merit alone. This page explains, step by step, how a guide gets from idea to published.

1. Destination shortlist

Editors propose alternatives to overcrowded destinations based on visitor pressure data, local-government reports, and traveler feedback. Every guide must answer the question: who is this better for, and why?

2. On-the-ground research

Where possible, writers visit in shoulder season and report on what is actually open, walkable, and welcoming. Where we rely on local correspondents, we credit them and disclose the relationship.

3. Drafting

Each guide follows a consistent template: context, what to do, where to stay, when to go, how to get there, and a 3–5 day itinerary. We avoid generic superlatives and price every recommendation in local currency.

4. Fact-checking

A second editor verifies opening hours, transport links, prices, and seasonal claims against at least two independent sources within 60 days of publication.

5. Sensitivity & impact review

We review each guide for overtourism risk. If publishing a place would likely harm it, we either anonymise specifics or shelve the piece.

6. Publication & maintenance

Guides are revisited at least once a year. Material changes are logged in our corrections record and the article footer.
