Alternatives to Amsterdam: Utrecht, Haarlem, Rotterdam

Three Dutch cities each making a different case

Utrecht, the canal city that lets you breathe

Utrecht's canals have a unique feature: the wharves sit at water level, two metres below the street, and have been converted into cafes and restaurants. You sit at water level under a Gothic warehouse arch, and the city above carries on without you. The Domtoren, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, is the central landmark, and climbing it is the single best view in the country.

It's smaller than Amsterdam, calmer, and the bicycle culture is even more pronounced.

Haarlem, Amsterdam at a slower speed

Haarlem is 15 minutes by train from Amsterdam Centraal. The Grote Markt, the Frans Hals Museum, the Sint-Bavokerk, and the canals all deliver a Dutch Golden Age city at a fraction of the noise. Stay in Haarlem and day-trip into Amsterdam: you'll spend less, sleep better, and still see the Rijksmuseum.

Rotterdam, the design counterpoint

Rotterdam was flattened in 1940 and rebuilt as one of the most architecturally ambitious cities in Europe. The Markthal, the Cube Houses, the Erasmusbrug, the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen with its mirrored facade. It's not a pretty old-town visit; it's a serious design weekend.

Add a day for Delft (15 minutes south by train) for the pretty old-town counterbalance.

Routing the whole trip

All three cities are connected on the same intercity line. A week splitting time between them is genuinely the best way to see the Netherlands for a second-time visitor, far better than staying in Amsterdam and day-tripping.
