Eating organically - is it just a fad or is it a wise choice?
As the years have passed, we have seen an ever increasing abundance of organic foods now being available. Even if you have joined this organic"movement", you may not be quite sure why you are putting forth the extra money - or, if you are still very content with purchasing conventionally produced foods you may wonder what all of the fuss is about. Here are my favorite reasons for eating organic:
Have you heard of the term goitrogen? A goitrogen is any substance that interferes with the proper function of the thyroid by hindering the uptake of Iodine. Many pesticides include chemicals that are harmful to the health of the thyroid. This may include forms of bromide, chlorine, or fluoride. Compared to 50 years ago, so many more of us are overweight, experience fatigue, and have a lack of concentration. A healthy thyroid is essential to obtaining physical, mental, and emotional well being.
Our liver is the main detoxifying organ in the body extracting wastes and toxic matter from the blood. Everything that we eat or drink will circulate through this extremely important organ. Keeping it healthy is necessary for proper metabolism along with production of numerous enzymes, cholesterol, and bile. Our eating and drinking habits can have a detrimental impact on the liver causing it to become inflamed due to an over load of stored toxins. Pesticides and herbicides are a huge contributor to having a toxic liver.
The United States and Canadian governments do not allow companies to label products "100% / Certified Organic" if they contain genetically modified foods. When you purchase a certified organic food product, you know that it does not contain any genetically modified organisms. Perhaps you have read conflicting pros and cons on the health risks associated with GMO foods. However, there are several concerns that need to be considered - and one main one is that GMO crops are now using an ever increasing amount of herbicides. This necessitates the need for an increased application as the "superweeds" become resistant to the herbicides. This affects birds, wild life, insects, marine life along with the numerous adverse effects on humans.
Wow, all of those reasons to eat organic are a little serious, saddening, and scary. So, I would like to end with a wonderful reason to eat organic: The food tastes better!
So next time you find yourself debating whether or not it is worth a little extra money to buy the organically grown, GMO free brand; consider the above food for thought.
